Hoops for health
Year 5 and 6 enjoyed 3 super sessions with professional basketball players from the Chetser based basketball team Cheshire Phoenix. The head coach and two players joined the children for the whole afternoon.
The children were split into three groups and took part in activities that explored healthy eating, anti-smoking and basketball control.
At the end of the afternoon, all the children were given information and FREE tickets to the teams next home game.
Finally, a HUGE well done to Freddie for winning a signed basketball!

Lighting fires and toasting marshmallows
After all our hard work, we sat around the fire and toasted marshmallows. They were amazing! Then Nick taught us how to use flint to light a fire; we found it quite tricky but some of us managed it on our 10th attempt! During this session, we also learnt about how to find food in the forest and some plants that maybe poisonous to us.
Shelter Building
We had great fun creating a shelter. Miss Ogden worked with a group who moved into number 17; we used our imagination and had a catwalk, television with satellite dish and even a guard at the front door! The shelter survived the rain storm (a cup of water) and our friends were impressed!
Visit to Hollybank Woods
Today we were really lucky because we got to go on a trip to Hollybank Woods which is near to Stanlow Oil refinery. When we arrived, we met Jan and her team and set about some fantastic activities. Have a look over the next few blog posts to see what we got up to.
1. Scavenger Hunt - we LOVED having time to investigate the area and found many different minibeast and plants - you'll have to look at the pictures sideways! Blogger won't let us rotate them!

Building our models
It Because we didn't want to waste any wood, we decided to make our model out of artstraws first. This proved quite tricky as we learned how important it is to measure accurately! We created 3D shapes and included lots of triangles (the strongest shape).
Introducing new materials....
We then began investigating different types of bridges and also different materials that we could use to make our own. Luckily, we had a lot of wood and began to find out ways we could join the wood together the best.
Some methods, such as PVA, were more successful than others!!!! The Pritti stick really didn't work!
The bridge problem!
As part of our first week back, Miss Ogden decided we were going to have to solve a problem. It was all to do with bridges! We began by investigating shapes and how strong they were.
We had to try to create a bridge out of one piece of paper that would hold the weight of a timer. It wasn't easy!!!! Then we had to make a tower using a range of different materials. The winning height was over 120cm!!!
